The current favourite to win is Serena Williams. The odds on her are 4/5 and she has just won her first round 6-1, 6-1, which may shorten them even further. She has been world number one several times and is the reigning Wimbledon champion and an Olympic gold medallist. She has also won the US Open three times, so it wouldn't be a surprise to anyone if she won this year. Her sister Venus is a less likely contender, due to continuing health problems (Venus Williams is now ranked 46th in the world and the odds against her are 33/1).

After Serena Williams the second favourite is Victoria Azarenka at 6/1. The Belarusian player is the current world number one and has won the Grand Slam. After this Maria Sharapove is at 8/1, but despite strong performances she has had health problems, which haven't helped the odds against her.
