What age is the best to start playing tennis?

There is a lot of argument about this. So many of the most famous tennis professionals seem to have started playing when they were tiny children - as young as 3 or 4 years old in some cases - but does that necessarily mean that it's a good idea for everyone to start so young?
Probably not, according to most experts. Players and coaches are generally reluctant to give a figure, but if you're thinking about real, serious tennis lessons, unless a child has shown a real interest or talent it may be better to wait until they are 7 or 8, when their muscles and ligaments have developed and they are a bit stronger. However, if a smaller child gets hold of a small racket and enjoys playing around with it, there is no good reason why they should be discouraged.
