In the US the top 10 private colleges (top 10 in terms of cost) all charge over $55k per year. The most expensive of these is Sarah Lawrence College, which charges over $61,200. This means that if you take a typical four-year course it will cost about a quarter of a million dollars. It is also a very expensive area to live in, so students will have high personal expenses too.
In fact more than half the students get some financial assistance in the form of a grant or scholarship. However, despite its high fees the college isn't as rich as some of the other top US schools, so it can rarely afford to educate anyone completely free.
Sarah Lawrence is a liberal arts college founded in 1926. It is in the city of Yonkers in New York State, not far from Manhattan. Sarah Lawrence places great emphasis on one to one and small group tuition (there are no large lectures but only seminars), and has a very high reputation, especially in the humanities generally and the performing arts in particular.
