There have been some changes here, since the Golden Globes awards last week. The success of openly political movies like Argo and Zero Dark Thirty have made some commentators wonder if, unusually in recent years, political films may do well at the Academy Awards too. They are not till late February so everything is still up in the air, but some clear favourites are emerging.
One movie that everyone agrees on is Lincoln. Whether for Steven Spielberg's direction or Daniel Day Lewis' performance, it is almost guaranteed to win at least one award and probably several. The political films mentioned earlier are also strong contenders. Going in a different direction, Life of Pi is likely to get something for special effects at least, and Les Miserables for costumes or set design, as well as quite likely for performances and direction. Another likely winner is Tarantino's Django Unchained.
