In late January 2013 it was confirmed that the director of the 7th film will be JJ Abrams. Most fans are very happy with this choice as Abrams is very well known in the world of sc-fi entertainment. He directed Star Trek in 2009 and has also directed Star Trek into Darkness, released this year. In fact, when he was first offered the Star Wars job, it is said that he turned it down as he felt his loyalty and career lay with the Star Trek brand.
He also directed one of the Mission Impossible film series, and was one of the creators of Lost, the hugely successul US series that ran for over six years.
The screenplay for the new movie will be written by well known writers Kathleen Kennedy and Michael Arndt, and George Lucas will still be involved but, since he handed over control to his colleagues, much less than in the past.
