Pregnancy is a source of inmense joy for both parents but it can also raise questions they had never thought about before. One of these questions is whether travelling by plane is dangerous for the fetus.

In most cases it is safe to fly while pregnant but problems comes mostly from airlines restrictions and it also depends on whether the flight is national or international. For instance, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) does not recommend women flying after the 36th week of pregnancy. Also, you may be prevented from flying by some airlines if you are due in 30 days.

However, it is necessary to remember that it is not safe for pregnant women to travel if they are having complicated pregnancies like placental abnormalities or if the woman has diabetes. Also, women must check with their doctor if they need to travel frequently while pregnant as radiation increases and air pressure might reduce the amount of oxygen in the blood although this should not pose risks to the fetus.

It is very recommendable for women to check the airline's policy about traveling and pregnancy to avoid unnecesary misunderstandings.
