Is it safe to travel to Japan in 2012?

As far as crime and such dangers go, Japan is one of the safest countries you can visit. You may be concerned about the Fukushima nuclear accident of 2011, and whether the radiation levels in Japan are still too high.

After the disaster, the area around the plant was considered very dangerous. Since then, the government has declared that there is no risk and two of the reactors have recently been reopened and will start generating power again early in July 2012. There have been protests about this.

In most of Japan, there is no more risk of high radiation levels than there would be anywhere else. Until April 2012 the US was advising its citizens to avoid travel in the area around Fukushima - anywhere in a radius of 50 miles - but this has now been lifted.
