Chris Froome is from Kenya. He was born in Nairobi in 1985. His mother was also born in Kenya but his father was born in England and in fact was once a well known hockey player for the English national team. His mother's family also originally came from England, so Froome has always had strong ties to Britain and in fact has always had a UK passport.
He spent his childhood in Kenya and then went to school in South Africa, where he also started a degree. It was in South Africa that his sporting career really began, although he had been a very keen cyclist since the age of 12. In 2007 aged 22, while still living in South Africa, he became a professional cyclist. He first competed in the Tour de France in 2008 (as a Kenyan), when he showed so much potential that there were discussions about him joining the England team, which he eventually did.
