What is the UK road tax actually for?

Actually in the UK, we do not have road tax any more as it was abolished in 1937. In 1926, Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister at the time, started the process to abolish road tax because he thought the concept of road tax was nonsense.

The term 'Road tax' we are using today has lost its origin meaning and is misleading. We are requried to pay tax on vehicles not for usage of the road. Check Directgov's website to find out how to tax your vehicle.
