The 2011 Tohoku earthquake, also known as the 3.11 Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake, was recorded as the most powerful earthquake in Japan since 1900.
The magnitude 9.0 earthquake happened in the northern-east Pacific Ocean at 2:46 pm local time on 11/03/2011 (Friday), which triggered tsunami in Miyako. The powerful tsunami travelled 10km inland in the Sendai area where it was the closest major city to the epicenter. As part of the damage of the tsunami, several unfortunate accidents happened at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.
According to Japanese government's report, the number of casualties is15,861, and over 6000 people injured and 3000 went missing. Read more here.
