Catalan is one of the two official languages of Catalonia, where Xavi Fernandez grew up - the other is Spanish and most people in the region speak both. Catalan and Spanish both appear on road signs and information notices, for example. Catalan has a lot of similarities to Spanish as it is in the same language group (the 'romance' languages) but in fact is closer to Italian and French than to Spanish. Catalan does have dialects and local variations like most languages, but nearly all the dialects are close enough to each other to be understood by any Catalan speaker; this may be one reason why the language is officially used across the region. It is also very important to the people of the region to use the language as an expression of their Catalan identity.
