Japan is famous for its wonderful temples and shrines, and every city has several buildings that you should see. Among the best known, and loved by both Japanese people and visitors, is the Temple of the Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji) in Kyoto. With its tranquil setting, pure gold covering and fascinating history it is definitely a must-see. You can learn more about Kinkakuji here.
Also very famous is the Sensoji temple in Tokyo. This is the oldest of Tokyo's religious buildings and goes back to the 7th century. Very different from the peaceful setting of the Golden Pavilion, this temple is very much an urban building and is surrounded by shops, markets and a crowd of visitors all the year round. Tokyo is also famous for the Meiji Jingu Shrine.
The Kotokuin Temple in Kamakura is one of the most visually stunning sights in the country; it is home to a 13th century giant bronze statue of the Great Buddha. You should also visit the Hase Kannon Temple in the same city, which houses an even larger, wooden image of the Kannon of Mercy.
