Menorca, or Minorca, is sometimes called the Jewel of the Balearics. It is thought to be one of the loveliest of these Mediterranean islands, and is small enough to be quite fully explored by car during a holiday.

It has an ancient history, going back to the Minoan period, and you can still find ancient monuments there as well as later Roman remains. The island was conquered by different groups throughout its history, and you can see this in the huge variety of architecture which is still there. There is also a rich legacy of arts and traditional crafts, which can also still be seen.

Otherwise Minorca is known for its coast and lovely fishing villages. it's a very popular destination with people who don't like the big, crowded, noisy Mediterranean resorts. You can find a lot of resorts there with a very quiet beach and perhaps just one bar.

You can learn more about holidaying on Minorca from the island's official information page.
