Are Primary School teachers well paid? Is it a good job to aim for from high school?

Currently a new primary school teacher will start on about £21,000. The pay scale goes up to around £30 with more experience. You don't actually have to have a degree unlike for secondary school teaching, though you do need teacher training. In order to be eligible for teacher training you need at least to have GCSEs in English, maths and a science, and to have passed police background checks.

Primary school teaching is a job you should only consider if you love children and are happy to spend your days with them - it's not a job that anyone does just for the money. To see if you are suited for this work, it would be a good idea to try volunteering for work with young children first - helping out with swimming instruction, for example, or getting involved with literacy schemes - your careers officer can help with ideas here. You could also try and get work experience in a nursery or similar.
