In 1964, Nelson Mandela, the leader of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, has been jailed for sabotage . He spent 27 years serving hard labour in Robben Island prison off Cape Town.

In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released, and two years later, he was jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize with President FW de Klerk. In 1994, Nelson was elected as South Africa's president in the country's first multi-racial elections.
