The British Olympic team has particularly succeeded in Athletics, holding 6 gold medals in the 800 metres competition (won in 1900, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, and 1980), 6 silver medals in 1500 metres (won in 1906, 1908, 1920, 1932, 1984, 1988) and in 3000 metres steeplechase (in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1932, 1964).

In the female competitions, Britain has 5 silver medals won in the high jump competition (won in 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956 and 1960), and 5 bronzes in 4x100 metres relay won in 1932, 1952, 1964, 1980 and 1984.
