There are no rules here. It really does depend on you and your husband, what you like, where you live and what you can afford.

The first question is whether to surprise him or not? if you do, it's much harder to organize of course, because you have to do everything when he's out - but then if he would enjoy a surprise, it's probably worth it. In that case it may be best to hire a venue if you can. Local community or church halls are often quite cheap to hire, and may well be able to offer some catering. At least, somewhere with a bar is a very good idea, and you and friends can perhaps bring some food yourselves.

The best birthday parties I have ever been to have been simple. No fancy dress unless you are real fans of that, no strange stripogram ladies or anything (again, unless you know he would enjoy it!) Friends and family, plenty to eat and drink, some music playing (get a friend to do this as they will know your tastes better than a DJ) and a happy atmosphere will make a better party than lots of gimmicks. Have a great time! These tips may help.
