How many spines does a hedgehog have?

A hedgehog can have between 5000 and 6500 spines on its back and sides. These spines are their defense mechanism to protect themselves from predators.

The hedgehog's back is formed by two muscles that control the position of the spines and that can protect its non-covered body areas such as head, feet and belly.
