You can read almost anything to a newborn, since they aren't yet able to understand your actual words but can enjoy and feel soothed by the rhythm of your voice reading aloud - there is some research to suggest that this has a different effect from just talking to them, perhaps because of the more even rhythm. Of course you should talk directly to your baby a lot too, but reading can be calming and pleasurable for both of you. If you read in a soft, clear voice you will communicate relaxation and security to your child, and it will also be relaxing for you and help strengthen the bond between you.

You will also be helping your baby experience books and reading as enjoyable and natural, and you will find it very easy, when your baby is a little older and able to react more to words and pictures, to start reading books specially for infants. You can find a good selection here, recommended by parents.
