The original band (first called the New Yardbirds) had four members: Jimmy Page, the guitarist, lead singer Robert Pant, John Bonham, the drummer, and John Paul Jones who played the bass and keyboard.
They are all alive except John Bonham, who died in 1980 aged 32. He had been drinking a lot of vodka the day before, but had not taken any other drugs at that time. He left a wife and two children; both his children have become musicians themselves and his daughter Zoe sometimes plays at Led Zeppelin conventions.
After Bonham died there was a lot of speculation about who would replace him, but in the end no new drummer was chosen and the band broke up. The surviving members said that they didn't wish to go on with the band after the tragic loss of their friend. Since then they have occasionally performed together, but mainly the three remaining members have followed separate careers.
