This question has been in the news lately, since on 25 June an Israeli or British visitor (not yet named) climbed up the tower and jumped off, killing himself. The man was seen climbing the tower from the outside and the tower was emptied of people and closed off while the police tried to reach him, but they couldn't do it and he ignored all attempts to persuade him to come down. He almost reached the top before he jumped. The tower is almost 325 metres high.

A woman also attempted suicide there the next day, but was stopped. The 25 July death was the first successful suicide attempt from the Eiffel tower in two years. Offical figures of the number of suicides from the tower are not available to the public, but according to one report the number is 341. However, now safety nets have been introduced the numbers have fallen.
