Nigel Farage is the leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party. This party was founded in 1993 with the main aim of getting Britain out of the European Union or at least weakening its ties to the EU. However, it is also associated with other right-wing ideas not necessarily to do with the EU, such as opposing immigration and gay marriage and denying climate change.
Nigel Farage became UKIP leader in 2010. He is personally a popular figure and may be the main reason why UKIP, which has always been very much a fringe party, has become more well known and started to attract more votes (it still has no MPs, but does have a number of councillors and MEPs). Farage has tried to rid the party of some of its more extreme members, and polls suggest that he has improved its image, though lately there have been scandals, notably over his own use of party funds provided by the EU, which may undo some of this.
