Saint Kitts, with its partner island St Nevis, is part of the state of St Kitts and Nevis, which together make up the smallest state in the Americas. It is part of the group of Leeward Islands in the West Indies, quite near Puerto Rico, Antigua and Dominica and about 1300 miles from Florida. You can see its position on a map here (use the + and - buttons on the left to change the perspective).
The official name of St Kitts is Christopher Island or Saint Christopher Island. It is a small island of about 35,000 people, and is home to the capital city of the state, Basseterre.
In the past the main industry of St Kitts was agriculture, especially sugar production, but this declined and sugar is no longer produced. Nowadays the island relies largely on tourism; the tourist industry is growing, and it also hosts a well known music festival.
