This is a long-held debate that cannot be properly summarised in 200 words but I am going to try shed some light. Perhaps the question is not whether video games have turned too violent for kids; rather, we might rephrase the question pointing to how children are educated in today's society.

Assuming video games have turned "too violent" for children implies children have a passive role, receiving inputs like automats and acting accordingly. This view is strongly influenced by behaviourist psychology, which dominated the field during the 20th century, especially after the second half.

But toda, recent developments in neuroscience and cognitive psychology adopt a more holistic stance toward human beings. From this perspective, children interact with a dynamic and constantly changing environment. If children live in a society that promotes the values of selfishness, hatred and intolerance, the chances are that violent video games will only reinforce these behavioural tendencies.

If, on the other hand, children grow in an environment that fosters solidarity, love and cooperation and critical thinking as core values, the chances are that the impact of violent video games will be minimised. But this is not a mathematical rule, it does not mean that a society that fosters solidarity (or the other way round) will have 0 crime; rather, this means that the emergence of violence in society is a matter of probabilities and is the result of what we, as humans, decide to promote as the main values the govern our society as a whole.
