It is difficult to say where is the most famous lighthouse in the world as perhaps the most famous lighthouse, Pharos, in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, lies in ruins deep beneath the sea. But Pharos is certainly the most famous lighthouse in the world.

The lighthouse was built between 290 and 270 BC by Sostratus of Knidos but was commissioned by Emperor Alexander the Great. It was one of the greatest constructions of the time, with a height of 240 ft. and a square base of a 100 ft. It was close to what we know today as a typical skyscraper!

But at present there are other famous lighthouses, for instance, the Eddystone lighthouse, near Plymouth (UK), built by John Smeaton between 1756 and 1759. there is also the Torre de Hercules, in A Coruna, Spain, the Dubh Artach, in Scotland, the L'Agulhas lighthouse in the southernmost tip of Africa, and the Cape hetteras Light, in North Carolina (US).
