The first ever commercial TV advert was broadcast in New York on 1 July 1941. This ad was paid for by the watch making company, Bulova, which is still very much around today. It was shown just before a baseball game was due to start, and by today's standards it was very simple indeed. It just showed a map of the US for a few moments, and at the same time a recorded voice was heard giving the slogan of the company - 'America runs on Bulova time'. That was all, but it started a revolution in the way goods were marketed and sold.

The Bulova ad cost the company $9 to broadcast! It wasn't the first attempt - that was in 1930 - but the previous attempt, by a fur-retailing company, was found illegal and removed from the air.

Still keeping up with the times, Bulova are now active on Facebook.
