Too many people just pass through Calais, either on their way out of the UK or going into it, as Calais is now the major route into Britain thanks to both the Dover ferry and the Folkestone tunnel. But Calais is well worth a visit in its own right.

A lot of the architecture in Calais reflects its history as an important port which was a valuable prize and therefore often under attack; often, in the past, by the English as the two countries warred for centuries. Examples of this are the Six Burghers Monument, commmorating the surrender to the English in the 14th century, and the 20th century Citadel built in case of attack from Germany.

As an international centre Calais is also well known for its entertainment and fine dining. Generally there is plenty to do in the evenings including night clubs and casinos. In the daytime you should visit the port and the nearby beaches, as the Pas de Calais region has some of the loveliest beaches on the north coast.
