The Treaty of London signed on 19 April 1839 was also called the Convention of 1839 or the First Treaty of London. The treaty was between the European great powers, Netherlands and Belgium. One of the most important aspects of the Treaty is that Belgium was guaranteed independence and neutrality.
Under the Treaty, Britain promised to defend Belgium in the event of invasion.
