It had seemed most likely that the US would win; the team needed only four and a half points to gain victory, but finally Europe overtook them with 8 1/2. This was the best recovery ever shown by the European team, and their best performance against the US for many years.
The decisive shot came from German Martin Kaymer, and then an error from Tiger Woods on the US side made victory sure for the Europeans.
Francesco Molinari of Italy was also praised for his brilliant playing in the final two matches, but many commentators said the outstanding performer was Paul Lowrie, who beat top US player Brandt Snedeker, while the highest individual score went to Ian Poulter.
