Munich-born director Michael Haneke (70) has won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival with his film Amour. The film is an introspective analyses of the effects of ageing and dementia on an elderly couple.

This is not the first time Aneke is awarded the prestigious prize at Cannes. In 2009 he won the Palme d'Or with The White Ribbon, a chilling, dark black and white film about a series of crimes in a small German village. Also, in 2005, he was awarded best director for Cache (Hidden) and the Grand Prize of the Jury for The Piano Teacher in 2001.
