Why can't being shy be a good thing?

Being shy can be a good thing. We live in a time where everyone is thinking about self-promotion, but if you meet a person who is more quiet, modest about themselves and doesn't seem to feel that they are 'in charge' of every situation, don't you find that person rather nice to know?
Shyness can feel unpleasant if you are the shy one - being nervous and worried, so that you dread social situations, isn't an enjoyable feeling - but if you come across as shy, that's not a problem for anyone except you: Others are likely to find it quite attractive, if they notice it at all (and nearly everyone is shy, so most people are too busy worrying about themselves to notice if you are shy or not).
The main thing is not to try and pretend to be what you are not. Shy people can put on a very brash, even aggressive manner to try and cover their fears, and this is really off-putting. Best to be quiet and try and seem friendly - soon you will find that other people respond well to you, which in turn means you can relax and be more open with them. Good luck.
